We are a team of three electronic engineering students from Colombia. It all started as a challenge. In our first semester, we were asked to find a problem that was frequent in our country and give it a solution with our knowledge of electronics. We began to notice 2 major problems: firstly it was very difficult for cyclists to communicate with other road actors, they were supposed to indicate their next movement by extending their arms on the direction they are turning but this led to confusions on the road, if the car driver didn’t see them or didn’t understand their indications. Secondly, there was a problem with the visibility of the cyclists on the road because they didn’t use reflective clothes which makes it very difficult to see them at night. Both of this problems make using the bike as a means of transportation dangerous for cyclists because of the probability of an accident.
Due to the pandemic, people began to use bicycles more as a means of daily transport to avoid crowds and infections. When all of this happened we saw a unique opportunity for Road lightning, so we went back to work on the prototype and ideas on how to improve it. We thought about what would be the best design, how it could be printed, what materials to use to make it of good quality but accessible to everyone. Taking this into account we managed to develop the prototype we have at the moment, a waterproof and customizable jacket that solves the problem of visibility and communication on the road.
